🦆 Interaction Nerds by UXA
This week from Archive & Collection: How deep learning can generate UI based on text input, and how you can spend all of Bill Gates’ money 🤑
👋 Announcements — AI in Academic Research
Can you believe that summer break ends in 2 weeks!? In the spirit of back-to-school season, our second issue of Archive and Collection continues exploring the trend of AI, taking a more academic perspective on the same topic of AI-generated art by focusing on some developments in HCI research! 🎒
🌱 Reading Corner — User Interface Generation
Just like how DALLE-2 (featured in Archive and Collection’s last newsletter) can create images from text, researchers have found ways of generating user interfaces from text input. This week, we’re featuring this recent paper, where researchers at Google and UC Berkeley created different deep learning models for UI generation and tested them with UI/UX practitioners! 👀
🍄 Side Notes — Spend Bill’s Money
If you have taken any economics classes, your teacher might have told you this joke: “Bill Gates and I have a combined net worth of $130 billion”. 😆
We all know that $130 billion is a lot of money, but how much (and what) exactly can you buy with it? Someone who was really curious about the answer to this question made this website that serves as an interactive way to showcase the sheer magnitude of Bill Gates's wealth. 💵
So far, we’ve purchased 20 billion Big Macs, 3000 tanks, and 11 NBA teams with $12 billion left to spare. What would you get with this much to spend? 🤔
Have a cool side project like this? We’d love to feature any design, code, or other UX/HCI-related projects that have been made outside of class. Fill out this form and share your work with us! 🤩
🙋 One Question for You
Last week’s question:
Share a picture you took this summer, how has your summer been?
Nicole:
The scariest escalator (in a subway station next to hudson blvd E nyc) I’ve taken, and I was only half way there to the top in the pic
Sean:
Our family used to make dumplings every Chinese New Year, and we picked it back up this July 4th hahah. Mom and I spend an afternoon making these together, was a fun time.
Emily:
I have a really bad sweet tooth, so my favorite part of summer is definitely eating a lot of ice cream and other cold desserts! Here’s a picture of some shaved ice with red bean and rice cake that I had recently 😋
Rebecca:
My summer has been filled with work and dance, but it went well most of the time and the sky always clears my mind and brings away my fatigue🥺
This week’s question:
What’s one of your most unexpected purchases? 💰
As always, you can reply directly to this Substack email, share your response through this form, or send it to yizes@andrew.cmu.edu
