👋 Announcements — Coming Back from Break and Two Weeks from XHacks!
Welcome back from spring break! We hope that everyone had a great break, really got some rest, and are reenergized for the second half of semester! 💪
While we don’t have any official announcements this week, Interaction Nerds continues to bring you more exciting content related to Design with AI to better prepare you for the XHacks that is happening next weekend! 🏃
🌍 Real World — ChatGPT is a Blurry JPEG of the Web
What makes ChatGPT feel so incredible to people? Is it the facade that the AI truly understands the material its responding with? Even when those are nonsensical but convincing sounding answers to factual questions?
If ChatGPT were to give entirely “factual” information (like a lossless compression algorithm converting a compressed file to its original), it would quote from articles - and you’d probably feel no more wonder than you get from everyday Google searches.
In this article, Ted Chiang argues that ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web. It compresses vast amounts of data into compressed, consumable bites, but loses accuracy & value in the process… and poses the question “how much are you willing to trade?”
🧠 Food for Thought How much do you trust convincing sounding arguments with little factual backing? How much do you trust ChatGPT?
🍀 Industry — Navigating the AI Revolution
While to some it may seem like BAM! AI has appeared and is here to take your design job, in reality, AI technologies have been developing for quite some time now; public perception just has yet to keep up with it.
How will (or already is) AI influencing design processes?
⚡Speed up the exploration process by generating massive numbers of alternative directions in a fraction of the current time.
🤾🏽 Analyze & synthesize vast amounts of customer data from various sources.
📈 Quickly test growth experiments (methods for testing how to scale a business)
🌈 Generate graphics for marketing & design.
✍🏽Generate UI - AI tech can currently turn hand drawn wireframes into design components with production-ready code. Several others are exploring the generation of entire apps.
But how will this affect MY work (as a designer or working with designers)?
🕰️ Drastically increase designers’ productivity, giving them more time & resources to focus on activities that require social intelligence or other higher level issues.
🦾 Enable us to pay more attention to accessibility & human-centered design.
🎯 Resource — Case Study Club
Case studies are a staple of nearly every designer’s portfolio, but it can be hard to know how to structure one, especially when first starting off.
Here’s a collection of hundreds of case studies (as well as interviews & articles) to learn from! You can search for specific project or sign up for their weekly newsletter for curated case studies.
